GMATS Strategic Partners
Alternative Power Program (APP)
GMATS partnership with the Academy’s Alternative Power Program (APP) has really grown in interest and
enthusiasm during the past few months. To support this effort, a laboratory that is an integrated wind, Hydrogen
fuel cell, Solar House, has been constructed and is located on the Academy grounds. This alternative
energy
laboratory has been labeled “globally unique” due to the combination of so many alternative energy
technologies into a single system. This prototype house represents Kings Point Systems Engineering- a
partnership between USMMA, GMATS, New York Institute of Technology, the future development of alternative
energy and the pursuit of energy independence. The house contains a self sufficient environment and
is an example of innovation and practicality as a habitable and energy efficient
living space. We welcome you to visit anytime.
It’s envisioned that the APP and its laboratory will be used in support of the
Academy’s and the Maritime Administration’s overall mission with a focus
on developing maritime applications for clean, renewable, non-fossil fuel,
energy systems. Possible APP laboratory utilization may range from student
training and exploration to industry-related component trials and testing
to graduate-level research and experimentation.
The Alternative Power Program is seeking young professionals as interns. If you share our passion for promoting
clean and sustainable energy, and would like to help bridge the gap between green power and the
maritime industry, please contact Greg Sachs at sachsg@usmma.edu. For more information on this program
or our other Alternative Power Programs, please visit us at app.usmma.edu.

Surface Warfare Officers School Command (SWOS)
Since May 2005, GMATS has been providing shiphandling training for all levels of Navy Surface Warfare Officers
using the latest generation of ship simulation technologies at the Navy’s Surface Warfare Officers School
(SWOS) located in Newport, Rhode Island. As part of this partnership, GMATS instructors deliver shiphandling
training to Division Officers, Department Heads, Prospective Executive and Commanding Officers, and Major
Command Officers. In the past few months, GMATS and SWOS have expanded their relationship wherein
GMATS instructors now also teach Bridge Resource Management (BRM), Electronic Chart Display System
(ECDIS), Automatic RADAR Plotting Aid (ARPA), and Voyage Management System (VMS) to SWOS students.
In addition to these expanded subject areas, GMATS and SWOS are developing training programs for
crews of the new Littoral Combat Ships (LCS). This training will include high-speed craft shiphandling and
BRM training unique to the specialized LCS platform. All of the above efforts complement the work GMATS
recently completed, as part of a two-year endeavor, with SWOS and the Navy’s Orlando Training Systems Division
(TSD) in developing comprehensive computer- and web-based training tools in the nautical sciences for
Navy Sailors.
