Nautical Science

The Nautical Science Division is dedicated to providing the best in professional education for all areas of the maritime industry. Today’s ships, tugs and support vessels have become increasingly sophisticated. We have the facilities and personnel to meet the technological and regulatory issues facing today’s mariners. Maritime personnel ranging from senior level to the newest trainees will find a variety of courses designed to provide valuable theoretical and practical education.

Offerings include United States Coast Guard (USCG) approved courses that will give a US documented merchant seaman the knowledge and Coast Guard endorsements necessary to advance his or her career. Additionally, the courses are designed to meet the regulatory requirements of all nations in line with the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

The Nautical Science Department at GMATS, has become a pioneer in the industry by teaming up with vessel owners and operators to provide new opportunities for seagoing personnel, such as the Crew Advancement Program (CAP). Customized Training Programs and seminars can be developed concerning a wide variety of subject matters upon request.

Facilities

The nautical science laboratories offer the student a hands-on training opportunity unparalleled in the maritime industry. The waterfront location and expansive facility provide real world learning capabilities. When it is not practical to utilize the waterfront, realistic simulators are provided to expand learning opportunities.

GMATS makes extensive use of “CAORF” (Computer Aided Operational Research Facility) a 360° full mission simulator for its Bridge Watchstanding courses and a brand new 16 station Transas simulator for its electronic navigation courses. This new simulator enables the students to operate on separate vessels and yet see and interact with each other in the same exercise.
